Position Purpose

The Manager Systems and Programming is responsible for assisting the director in overseeing the mainframe programming and system management group within Information Systems.  This group is responsible for mainframe system management and  programming on the  enterprise's systems.  Enterprise system management includes {Data deleted - for display purposes only}

Problems and Challenges

The enterprise systems are the center of the enterprise's data processing activities.  It is extremely important to the enterprise that the enterprise systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible.  The Manager Systems and Programming is challenged {Data deleted - for display purposes only}.

Essential Position Functions

Principal Accountabilities
  • Assists the director in the management and direction setting for the enterprise's application programming group including setting priorities, coordinating, and the reporting of group activities.  The Manager Systems and Programming is responsible for the daily activities of the members of the enterprise application programming group.

  • Provides senior technical leadership to IS and the enterprise including being conversant with the future direction of enterprise systems, how that direction will impact the enterprise, and how future and current systems can be exploited for the benefit of the enterprise.  Given the high level of technical leadership provided by the manager of systems, the manager will also serve as a source of documentation and standards to help direct the activities of IS as a whole.

Authority
  • Oversee the activities of the enterprise application programming group including system management and application programming.

  • Manage the personnel of the enterprise application programming group.

Contacts

Within the enterprise, contacts will be made with applications and computer operations staff.  Routine contact is required with IS managers at all organizational levels and with technology vendors.  Within the business, periodic contact is required with executives in charge of the key business units using IS services and with sales and technical support personnel from hardware and software vendors for troubleshooting and the development of specifications.

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • BS or BA degree in computer science or related field

  • Experience with enterprise system internals, including the knowledge of low level languages such as C and 32-bit macro assembler

  • Ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing

Career Ladder 

This position could lead to director positions within Information Systems.  This position would naturally lead into management activities rather than continued emphasis on technical skills.  A specific position above this one would be Director Systems and Programming.
